Reign Of The Mountain King Review
Edvard Grieg’s famous masterpiece, In the Hall of the Mountain King, was composed in 1875, and it’s also a highly memorable part of the soundtrack for Ibsen’s even more famous play, Peer Gynt. The recognizable piece of music has been used with some success in a few online slots before, not least by NextGen themselves in their original Rise of the Mountain King. Reign Of The Mountain King is a very similar, albeit significantly watered-down, follow-up.
The golden rule of sequels is that they should either be very different, and/or superior, to the original release. Reign Of The Mountain King is neither, as both the features, the audiovisual presentation and the math model is diluted. The bonus round has been replaced by a Respins feature with upgradable multiplier wilds, and the only positive change is the possibility of cracking the 10,000x potential via up to x512 multiplier wild wins in the base game.

The Mountain King Wild steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos, and he’s also the highest paying symbol in the game together with the Queen. Landing 5 wilds on a payline awards 20x your stake, while regular premiums pay between 6 and 20 x your stake for the same.

During regular spins, if a single Mountain King Wild is part of a 4-oak or 5-oak win, and no other wilds are in view, the payout may be boosted by a random wild multiplier of x5, x8, x64 or x512. This can lead to large base game single spin payouts all the way up to the 10,000x win cap.
You trigger the Mountain King Respins feature when 3 wilds land on reels 2, 3 and 4, and each wild starts with an x1 multiplier.
The wilds become sticky as the respin plays out, and if new wilds appear on reels 1 to 5 they too become sticky. Gem symbols may land to overlay regular symbols, and these get collected in a meter above the reels.Every third gem you collect triggers the next multiplier on the trail, and the values go from x2 to x3, x5 and x8. Any new multiplier achieved is attached to all sticky wilds on the 3 middle reels only. Multiple wilds that are part of the same win will get their respective multiplier values multiplied, so three x5 multipliers, for example, turns into an x125 boost. The feature ends when no wilds or gems land on a respin, or if you hit the £250,000 win cap.

You get a good taste of the base game grind, before we finally trigger the Mountain King Respins feature around 2:10 into the 3:27-minute highlights video.
We managed to upgrade the multiplier trail only once, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.Review Summary
It’s hard to understand what SG Digital partner, NextGen, has been thinking with this follow-up, as Reign Of The Mountain King has been watered down in every possible way compared to the somewhat successful Rise of the Mountain King. Audiovisually, the difference isn’t all that noticeable, but the 96 % RTP is notably reduced. While the 10,000x potential is solid enough for sure, it’s still only 1/5 of the win cap you get in the first release.
The highest wild multiplier you can hope for from a single wild win is x8 in this game, while they go as high as x100 in Rise. Wilds also come with x5 multipliers by default in the bonus round of Rise, so we hardly see a single reason players would want to play Reign instead of the far superior Rise. Not that Rise was all that either by the way, and you get a somewhat dated visual style and awkward game pace in both installments.
Pros
- Single wild wins with up to x512 multiplier
- Respins w/ sticky wilds & multiplier upgrade trail
- Collect gems to get up to x8 multiplier wilds
- Win up to 10,000x your stake (£250,000 cap)
Cons
- Inferior sequel to Rise of the Mountain King
If you appreciate Reign Of The Mountain King Slot you should also try:
Rise of the Mountain King - is the original release from NextGen Gaming, and it plays out on 5x3 reels with 30 paylines. The volatility is high also here, but you can win up to 50,000x your stake in the Rise of the Multiplier feature. The wild multipliers can go as high as x100, and this is a far better game in our view.
Hall of the Mountain King - is an audiovisually superb release from Quickspin, and Edvard Grieg’s classic masterpiece truly comes to its right in this installment. The bonus round comes with 3 levels, and you get symbol upgrades, whirling wilds and a progressive multiplier up to x15.
The max win is a decent 7,326x your stake.Troll Hunters 2 - is a beefed up version of Play ‘n Go’s popular original release, and you’ll benefit from a progressve win multiplier up to x3. There is also a wild multiplier feature to look forward to, as well as a bonus round with 2x2 mega wilds. The volatility is high, and you can win up to 5,000x your stake.
