Big Bass Bonanza Megaways Review

Reel Kingdom’s original Big Bass Bonanza is among the most popular releases not only in the fishing slot genre, but amongst all slots ever made. The beefed-up Bigger Bass Bonanza has also been a huge success, so this Megaways release was bound to happen sooner rather than later. The cozy simplicity is still going strong, and this version comes with relaxing fish animations in the subsea backdrop.

We’ve heard about using dynamite to catch fish before, but in Big Bass Bonanza Megaways the Fisherman has even brought a Bazooka to the usually peaceful fishing expedition. These 2 brand new modifiers definitely light up the bonus round when they trigger, and they come with hilarious intro animations to boot. The 4,000x potential could have been higher, but overall this is a solid installment in Reel Kingdom’s wildly popular fishing range.

Big Bass Bonanza Megaways Features

Regular pay symbols pay from left to right as usual, and the fishing gear premiums pay between 2 and 50 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins. The fish symbols pay up to 1.75x your stake when lined up on paylines in the base game, and each fish also comes with a cash value that’s collected by the fisherman wild in the bonus round.

Winning symbols are removed from the grid via the Tumble feature, and new and/or existing symbols drop down to fill the gaps. This process can repeat indefinitely, just as long as you keep landing new winning combinations.

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters anywhere in view, and this awards 10, 15 or 20 free spins, respectively.

Fish symbols drop to the bottom of the grid instead of being removed by the Tumble feature here, and the Fisherman Wild collects all cash values from any fish present at the same time.

Fisherman Wilds are also collected in the meter on the right-hand side, and every 4 collected fisherman awards +10 free spins and a fisherman multiplier upgrade. The multiplier is applied to all collected fish values, and you can retrigger/upgrade 3 times. This awards up to 50 free spins in total at best, and the multiplier range is x2, x3 and x10.

Two special features can trigger during the bonus round only, and these may be awarded when the fisherman wild lands without any fish present. The Dynamite feature adds fish to random positions, while the Bazooka feature explodes all present symbols except the fisherman wild. This may land new fish symbols to be collected as the Tumble feature kicks in.

Review Summary

Reel Kingdom has done a lot of things right in this Megaways version, and it’s a better game than the popular original in our humble opinion. We have to admit that we are a tad disappointed by the 4,000x potential though, as this Megaways release was a golden opportunity to exceed what’s already on offer in the Bigger Bass Bonanza follow-up. Upping it to 10,000x would not only make it on par with most Megaways engine games, it would also match the potential in the competing Fishin' Frenzy Megaways from Blueprint.

The repetitive soundtrack is cozy at first, but becomes a bit annoying after a while. The animated intro to the Bazooka and Dynamite features are quite fun to watch, sporting the fisherman with a combat helmet with the Full Metal Jacket-inspired tagline “Born to Fish”. These two modifiers add a new dimension to gameplay, which we like, and the bonus round multiplier upgrade system will be familiar to all fans of the previous installments.

Pros

  • Tumble win mechanic and up to 46,656 megaways
  • Upgradable reel ‘em FS w/ up to x10 multiplier
  • Bazooka and Dynamite modifiers in bonus round

Cons

  • The 4,000x potential is low for this engine
  • Beware of customizable RTP ranges

If you enjoy Big Bass Bonanza Megaways you should also try:

Fishin' Frenzy Megaways - comes with the same simplistic charm as the original, but with a healthy dose of steroids injected. Up to 15,625 paylines can be generated, and you can win up to a solid 10,000x your stake in the reel ‘em bonus round.

Bigger Bass Bonanza - is the previous Reel Kingdom follow-up to their smash hit original, and it comes with 5x4 reels and 12 paylines. Five of a kind fish wins collect their respective values also in the base game, and the bonus round is pretty similar to the game at hand. The 4,000x potential is also the same, and the volatility is high also in this version.

Big Fin Bay - comes with Thunderkick’s innovative Pay Ways engine, and you get 6 reels and 5,040x fixed ways to win in the base game.

Winning wilds expand the reels with up to 117,649 win ways in the bonus round however, and this can lead to payouts up to 15,040x your stake.
